With China allowing all couples to have a second child since January, Fujian is expecting 50,000 second children born in 2016, according to the provincial health and family planning administration on March 9.
In order to ensure the implementation of the "second-child" policy, the administration has investigated the capabilities of medical resources for women and children in the province to make sure there is no shortfall, said an official.
He also added that during the 13th Five-year Plan period (2016-2020), the health authority will continue to improve the medical services for women and children. The current plan includes setting up service standards at provincial, city and county levels, improving county-level obstetrics departments, expanding bed capacity for pregnant women, and encouraging social capital to engage in midwifery services.
The government will also provide tailor-made services such as health evaluation and pregnancy guidance for older pregnant women and improve the province’s ability in treating the newborn and pregnant affected by critical illness.
