Fujian province's environment is the 6th most competitive among 31 provincial-level administrative regions in China, according to a report.
The survey, conducted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Fujian Normal University and some other units, investigated the status-quo of the environment in 31 candidate regions between 2010 and 2012.
The provinces of Liaoning, Guangdong and Shandong clinched the top three places.
Fujian made a big leap across the board. It ranked 2nd in environmental security, up by 18 spots, and climbed to sixth in environment quality, up by 14, and took the 6th place overall in environmental competitiveness.
The ascendance in the rankings shows Fujian has enhanced its capability in natural disaster control and achieved better environmental quality, said Huang Maoxing, vice dean of the Economic School of Fujian Normal University, who is also the executive chief editor of the report.
In the next stage, Fujian should better handle the discharge of industrial waste and promote the upgrade of its industrial structure, he said.
