Fujian province has recorded 61 dengue fever cases as of Sept 24, said the province’s health authorities on Thursday, according to the website of People's Daily.

Among the 61 dengue cases, 39 were travellers and the rest were infected locally, including 14 in Fuzhou and 8 in Putian.

No one in Fujian has died so far from the disease, which has become more prevalent in Southeast Asia and Taiwan this year.

Dengue is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted through mosquito bites. Once an individual contracts dengue, the person manifests symptoms of the disease four to 10 days later.

Typical symptoms include fever (sudden onset), intense headache (especially behind the eyes), muscle and joint pains, flushed skin or rashes on the arms and legs, and perhaps minor bleeding of the gums and/or nose.
