The first Shanghai International Orchid Exhibition opened in Shanghai Chenshan Botanic Garden on March 28. Paphiopedilum armeniacum defeated over 700 orchids to become the champion of the individual group.

The entries were divided into three groups: setting, bonsai complex and individual orchid. The individual orchid group was further divided into five subgroups: Cymbidium and leaf art, Cattleya hybrid, Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum and other orchids. Over 20 orchid settings, nearly 100 bonsai complexes and more than 700 rare and valuable orchids took part in the exhibition.

The judging panel was composed of orchid experts from 14 countries and regions such as the United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain and Ecuador. The gold awards, silver awards, bronze awards and merit awards were selected by the seven judging groups of the panel. The champion was the best among the gold award winners.

Paphiopedilum armeniacum of Lvyuan Company from Xingyi, Guizhou, one of the rarest orchids alive, stood out with its bright color, elegant posture and delicate display. It was the champion of the group. The priceless, engendered species Paphiopedilum armeniacum is known for its color (rare apricot) and has been listed under state protection. Apart from the champion, seven gold awards, 38 silver awards, 77 bronze awards and 103 merit awards were also revealed on the same day.

All the award-winning settings, bonsai complexes and individual orchids will be displayed at Greenhouse D of Chenshan Botanic Garden. Visitors are free to enjoy the beauty and delicacy of the flowers.
