A world-level summit on the emerging big data industry will take place in Guiyang, the capital of Southwest China’s Guizhou province, from May 26 to 29.

"It's the first of its kind throughout of the world in the big data sector," said Chen Gang, Party chief of Guiyang, speaking about the Guiyang International Big Data Expo 2015 & Global Big Data Era Guiyang Summit, which will be held in the Guiyang International Conference & Exhibition Center.

Industry giants and business experts will take part in the event, including Brocade CEO Lloyd Carney, SAP China CEO Mark Gibbs, AsiaInfo CEO Edward Tian, Alibaba President Jack Ma, and Foxconn CEO Terry Gou.

"Guiyang is expected to take the lead in the country to kick off a new era of the big data industry — the block data industry," said Chen Gang, Party chief of Guiyang, who released his latest book, Block Data, at the Academy of the Chinese Museum of Finance in Beijing on May 15.

Block data includes massive big data information from different sectors and processing that information could significantly drive different sectors' growth, Chen said, adding that block data is the advent of the new era of big data.

He said block data could help spur the government's efficiency in public management.

In its latest move to drive the sector, Guiyang began a citywide free Wi-Fi project on May 1, with the city government assuring the public that the connection is secure and safe for confidential information.

The move followed the opening of the nation's first big data exchange, the Guiyang Big Data Exchange, in April.

To date, the exchange has been home to 11 deals, under the country's laws on the protection of personal privacy.

The exchange is expected to see its trade volume hit 200 million yuan ($32.8 million) by the end of this year.

Edward Tian, AsiaInfo CEO, said block data is set to change the future of business, so it is critical to formulate laws and regulations to cope with the challenges ahead.

He said that after any industrial revolution a new city or a city cluster emerges, such as Detroit and the Silicon Valley.

"I believe Guiyang is expected to shine in the country, like Detroit and Silicon Valley, in the near future. It has taken the lead in the country's urbanization road in using big data to solve difficulties, in sectors of traffic, food and healthcare," he said.

"Guiyang's campaigns could best benefit from block data soon."
