More than 3,000 teachers voluntarily spruced up campuses in Guizhou’s Ziyun Miao and Bouyei autonomous county over the last two months.
The event covered 18 secondary schools and 120 primary schools. Classrooms equivalent to the size of approximately six football fields were painted, in addition to passageways and walls.
More than 13,000 trees were also planted to improve the environment and beautify campuses. Roads and ball courts were upgraded, taking thousands of voluntary hours to complete.
Lacking the proper resources and funds to develop education, authorities in Ziyun enlisted the help of volunteers in the county, while schools offered to provide materials.
“Since May 23, all the teachers have been living in the school and everyone exerted every effort to decorate the campus,” said Jiang Tianxin, a teacher from Xinmin Primary School.
Li Guangyong, from Bandang County Zhongxin Primary School, explained that the decoration reflected local traditional culture, ethnic culture and the spirit of patriotism.
The newly decorated campuses were well received by students. “Every lot and wall in the school seems to be telling stories and the whole campus is much more poetic,” said Wei Caiyun, a student from Bandang Middle School.
“Kids in mountainous areas also like animation characters like Snow White. We are working to create a fairy tale world for our students,” said Xiao Jianhua, a primary school teacher.
