Volunteer drivers devoted to National Para Games

HANGZHOU, China - "We offered 50 private cars for service and most of us are millionaires or even billionaires," said Peng Wu, a volunteer driver for the Eighth National Para Games of China from The Lions Clubs International.

Though established since 2005, the Lions Clubs International D386 Zhejiang China still remained as a low-profile name for local audience and para athletes in the Eighth National Para Games of China.

"Unlike other charity groups, we usually spread ourselves by word of mouth instead of public press," said Dai Jianming, the executive president of the Lions Zhejiang.

According to Dai, they have about 1,326 "lions" participating in the club, including business bosses, government officials, housewives. The Lions offered six services including traffic service this time for the national Para Games.

"It totally depends on the members' individual schedule to take part in the activities like this," said Yang Beibei, a small private company boss in Zhejiang province while driving her own car to deliver referees to venues.

"We are not stars who can do charity by using their social influence. Plus we are also not the white-collars who have to work full-time to guard their posts. So we should devote what we should devote to feedback the whole society," said Yang.

Like Yang, all the "lion"s offered not only the cars and their own time, but also afforded all the fees in the Games period, including petrol and toll. However, the "lions all believed that every time they service, they could get a lot more than what they gave.

As the Lions Clubs International claimed on their website, the Lions have 1.35 million members of their volunteer organization in 206 countries and geographic areas.
