BEIJING - The family tomb of an ancient princess will come under the protection of the local government, according to the cultural relics bureau in north China's Hebei province, where the ruins are located.
The tomb of the daughter of Yuan Dynasty founder Kublai Khan is located in Guyuan County and is believed to be the only royal tomb from the Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368) ever discovered in China, a bureau spokesman said on Tuesday.
Thirty tombs have been found in the area surrounding Princess Yuelie's tomb, archaeologists said. Her husband, son and daughter-in-laws are also buried in these tombs, according to archaeologists.
Before being verified as a burial area, the site was believed to be a summer resort for the imperial family during the Liao Dynasty (907-1125).
