A group of journalists visited the South-to-North Water Diversion Project's central route in Henan province-Yellow River Cross Project on July 28, Dahe News reported.
The project delivers water from the Yellow River's south bank to its north bank through two tunnels at the bottom of the river, each 4,250 meters in length. The tunnels lie between 23 and 35 meters underground.
Large pools of underground water and complicated geological conditions make water leakage very likely, and may result in the tunnels' collapse. So far, the project's engineers have solved nine major technical problems.
Only after 94 days will the first stage of the project be put into service. Water will then pass through the tunnels for the first time.
