Starting construction in May 1991, Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone WEDZ is a national level development zone approved by the State Council of P.R.C. in April 1993. In April 2000, Export Processing Area was set up in WEDZ, designated by the State Council. The programmed area is 192.7km2 among which 40km2 has been fully developed.
WEDZ embraces a very favorable geographical position and spacious space for development. WEDZ is located on the north bank of the Ynagtze River and has advanced transport facilities. National highway No.318 (Shanghai -- Lhasa ) comes across the zone from the east to the west, and so does Beijing —Zhujiang National Express form the north to the south, making it easy to reach anywhere in China . Spurs to national railways as Beijing — Guangzhou and Beijing — Kowloon are in full swing.
Surrounded with 7 lakes like Sanjiao Lake and Houguan Lake , WEDZ is full of attractions for residents, travelers and investors with her natural beauty and environmental pleasantness. An infrastructure system has been completed inclusive of road, railway, water supply, power, gas, heating, telecom, drainage and so on. A sewage treatment plant and a cargo wharf are under construction.
The strategy of WEDZ is to stress on auto industry and hi—tech industry, to develop machinery, electronic , food processing and beverage, building material processing, pharmaceutical and biology engineering as subsidy, and to promote coordinated development of tertiary. New joint ventures set up by Dongfeng and Nissan, Dongfeng and PSA, Dongfeng and Honda will bring about annual production capacity exceeding 1 million cars in 5 years.
In 2010, large industrial enterprises witnessed total industrial output value of RMB 150.842 billion and fiscal revenue of RMB 18.28 billion in WEDZ. WEDZ has become the largest and fastest-growing state-level economic and technological development zone in central and western China.
