Folk customs of Yunxian county

Yunxian county boasts a long history with rich cultural heritage. It is known for integrating folk customs of the Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces and songs of the Hubei and Henan provinces.

Its major folk arts are the flower-drum opera, the phoenix lamp dance, the local folk song , Quju opera, Henan opera, Er Peng Zi opera, and gong and drum beating. These are all characteristic of Hubei, Henan, Shaanxi and Sichuan provinces, showing both royal demeanor and primitive features. The musical instruments are xiao, gong, drum, suona, erhu, bamboo flute, bo and small cymbals. Such instruments are representative of local dramas, Er Gan Zi Recruitment (to the tune of Er Peng Zi), Hongjiang Torrents (to the tune of Yunyang Flower Drums), Sleeping Tiger Worships Phoenix (Henan Opera), Zhang Fei Meeting the Wise at Juanxi Cave, and Stubborn Ox in Deep Mountains (modern Henan Opera).

Yunxian also celebrates a lot of folk festivals like the Lantern Festival, Mountain God Temple Fair, Get-together Day, Tomb-sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Dragon Clothes Drying Day, Sacrificing Day, Mid-autumn Festival, Mountain-climbing Day, Rice Porridge Festival, Kitchen God Festival, and New Year’s Eve.
