A worker checks the growth of spruce in a woods seedling base in Arxan, Hinggan League, on August 30. The forest totals 520,000 hectares in the county-level city of Arxan in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region’s Hinggan League, which stretches across the southwest foot of the Greater Khingan Range. Since the ban of cutting trees was implemented in 2012, the city has been endeavoring to develop an under-forest economy including special plantation and animal farming. To date, there are 1,120 households and 32 cooperatives engaging in animal farming in the city, in addition to eight large-scale seedling bases and 800 individual seedling practitioners.
