Dingsheng Cake (ding sheng gao)

A taste of Zhouzhuang

During the Song Dynasty (960-1279), people made these cakes for soldiers as a good luck charm and to wish for victory against enemies. Dingsheng cake literally means cake of triumph. Made from dates, walnuts and rice flour, the cake is spongy and slightly sweet.

Other delicacies such as a variety of pastries, won ton and the infamous stinky tofu awaits in Zhouzhuang.
