"Village-to-village" rural highways have been realized. Since the launch of rural highway construction work in 2003, nearly 8,000 km rural highways have been open to traffic and 742 rural bridges have been rebuilt. 4,100 km rural highways were completed and 559 rural bridges were rebuilt during the first three years of the "11th Five-Year Plan". At the end of 2006, classified highways covered all the 1,824 administrative villages in Nantong, fulfilling the goal of the "11th Five-Year Plan" ahead of schedule. Coverage of rural passenger buses have been promoted. The number of rural passenger buses in Nantong has reached 1,251 with 40,749 seats, covering 1,776 administrative villages, with a coverage rate of 96.8 percent. 380 rural bus stations and 3,600 station boards have been built. 24 town bus stations have been built or rebuilt. An all-direction rural bus network system has been formed to connect urban and rural areas and provide convenience for rural residents.
