A digital gallery wall in Suzhou Art Museum, Suzhou of Jiangsu province came into use on July 12.
The digital wall consists of 16 high-definition liquid crystal display (HD-LCD) screens placed in two layers, featuring human body sensors and multi-touch technology. Visitors can wave their hands to operate in the distance; they can also click the "like" button on the screen to show their fondness for paintings on the wall or download pictures to their mobile phones.
Officials said that it is first of its kind in Suzhou, and allows visitors to scan the quick-response (QR) code of every picture and save its information, enjoying exhibitions anytime and anywhere. In traditional museums, visitors have no chance to appreciate all of the exhibitions at one time due to the limitations of time and space.
The digital wall highlights the combination of new media and traditional exhibition. More than 170 paintings of the "Southern Yangtze — 2015 China Oil Painting Exhibition" are displayed on the wall. Other 400 paintings recently exhibited in this museum have also been saved into the database to welcome visitors.
"The museum will collect visitors' preferences and show the most popular paintings", said Jiang Ding, the director of the Information Department of Suzhou Municipal Center of Public Culture. The wall will also showcase digital collections of other museums at home and abroad.
