Taicang has great pedigree as one of China's leading sports cities. It has been named one of the country's first national advanced sports counties by the Chinese government, and has hosted a number of international sporting events.

Race walking is very popular in Taicang, and the city expects a big turnout to the event in 2018. Taicang's walking team previously won the women’s 20km walking race at the 2013 National Games in Jiangsu province.
