Wuxi's Binhu district opened an account on WeChat (ID: wxbhfb), a Chinese messaging app with more than 500 million active users.
Over the first month, the official account drew more than 1,200 followers with updated news, local customs and practices, recreation and gourmet food.
Binhu district is embracing new media channels and launching social media platforms to expand its popularity.
In addition to the WeChat account, the district has an account on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter.
The two platforms will add interactive activities and service functions, aiming to bridge the distance between the government and public, and increase efficiency.
