South Korean fencer Kim Jung Hwan, newly crowned 2018 World Fencing Championships gold medalist in the men's individual sabre, said that it still remains unknown if he will go to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
He made the remarks in an interview with China Daily on Monday in Wuxi, as the championships takes place in the city in East China's Jiangsu province.
"I am 36 years old now, so I'm not certain. I'll try my best for the coming 2018 Jakarta Asian Games in August and take its results into consideration." Kim said.
Kim, an Olympic team champion in 2012 and individual bronze medalist in 2016, had never won an individual world title before.
"I didn't set my eyes on the gold, but I did my best. I was fortunate to claim the championship in the end," said Kim, adding that Wuxi is a lucky place for him, as he also claimed gold in the men's team sabre in the 2016 Asian Fencing Championships in Wuxi.
"Sometimes competing in foreign countries can be quite inconvenient, but Wuxi has many Korean restaurants, so I like it a lot," said Kim, who highly acclaimed Wuxi's efforts in organizing the tournament.
The championships, running until July 27, is seeing roughly 1,370 of the world top fencers from 109 countries and regions competing in 12 individual and team events in epee, foil, and sabre.
