The first Wuxi Wanshan Lake Marathon was held on Nov 11 by the beautiful Wanshan Lake in Xishan district, Wuxi, the first full marathon held in the district.

The competition included a full marathon (42.195 kilometers) and a mini marathon (5 km). Over 6,000 runners from 31 provinces in China and 15 countries, including the USA, Kenya, Germany, Singapore and Japan, took part.

To provide a better experience and service, 2,200 university students volunteered to guide the runners and provide supplies along the racing tack. The runners were also provided with after-competition rehabilitation in the relaxation area.

The route of the marathon started at Yingyue Lake subway station and passed through Yingyue Lake Central Park, Hongdou Wealth Square, Houshan Forest Park, Jiuli River Wetland Park, Jiaoyang Road, Wanshan Lake Wetland Park and other core scenic spots in Xishan.

The marathon adapted various high technologies. During the race, the physiological index and time record of each runner were tracked in real time with a smart bracelet, while the facial recognition system allowed runners to sign in and let the audience access real time pictures and videos.

About 21 medical aid stations, 13 ambulances, one medical helicopter, 60 automated external defibrillators (AED) and 300 medical aid runners were equipped at the scene to guarantee the safety of the runners.

To raise the interest of more people in marathons and healthy lifestyle, the marathon gave a special bonus totaling 70,000 yuan ($10,060) for the top three Chinese runners, and the total bonus for the marathon reached nearly 500,000 yuan.

Reuben Kemboi, Ezekiel Cherop Cherop from Kenya and Chelimo Vincent from Uganda ranked top three among the men. The record of the male champion, 02:15:47, breaks the record for non-special full marathon runners in Wuxi.

Kenyan runners Maureen Jepkoech Kiprono, Cecilia Wayua Michael and Nancy Chepkurui ranked top three among the women.
