Wuxi enacted a set of regulations on household garbage sorting and recycling from September, which requires residents to sort household waste into four kinds: hazardous waste, recyclables, perishable waste (kitchen waste) and other waste.
Individuals who fail to do so will be fined up to 200 yuan ($30). For companies and institutions, the fine can go up to 10,000 yuan.
The regulation also extends to the sorting, collection, transportation and processing of household waste, which is expected to improve the city's ability to deal with refuse.
A total of 13 main stations on Wuxi metro lines have applied for the four separate category rubbish bins, with guide on how to use them to be placed on the side. Other metro stations will remain using two rubbish bins to separate recyclables and other waste.

Wuxi government held a launching ceremony on the garbage sorting regulation on Aug 31.
During the ceremony, the new sets of rubbish bins caught the attention of people.
As a user scans an attached QR code with their smart phone and places sorted garbage in the right bins, they can accumulate points for gifts.
Wuxi Party Secretary Li Xiaomin learned about the progress of new garbage bin promotion and asked all the city's departments to work on raising people's awareness of garbage sorting.
