A medical expert team from No 1 People’s Hospital in Zhangjiagang of Jiangsu province came to the city’s economic & technological development zone to provide medical service for the elderly with no family on January 21, 2014.

It was the first event of a series of charity medical care events in 2014.

Services included regular body checks, health counseling and free medicine. In a special care room on the sixth floor of the nursing home, 92-year-old Chen Xizhen lay in bed and was cared for by his wife Jiang Peifang. Fan Dongliang, a doctor in the department of neurology, checked his blood pressure and leg muscles, asking in detail about his medicine and created a treatment plan.

Jiang was grateful for the plan. She said she thought the problem had to do with Chen’s heart, until the doctor told her it was Parkinson’s disease.

“It is convenient for us as it was difficult for me to take my husband to hospital as he couldn’t walk,” Jiang said.

The Zhangjiagang health bureau has organized 10 teams of 80 experts from different departments at various hospitals to carry out 100 charity service events to treat 1,000 special patients for free. More than 10,000 ordinary people will benefit from the events as regular medical checks, health lectures and door-to-door services are included.

An official from the health bureau said the events mainly focus on elderly people, new residents and migrant workers.
