An aged man surnamed Xu fell to the ground in Zhangjiagang of Jiangsu province and broke a bone in his left leg . He was then surprised to get 2,553 yuan as indemnity from an insurance company.

Xu’s benefit came from a project in the city, in which anyone over the age of 70 receives three kinds of insurance from the government, including nursing home general liability insurance, nursing care liability insurance and accident insurance.

In 2013, 193 people got accident compensation amounting to 631,300 yuan . Nursing homes got compensation of 105,900 yuan.

Those who fall down, drown or meet traffic accidents will get compensation of no more than 9,200 yuan. The government warns that families should report to police the first time when aged people have an accident.

It has become a controversial topic in China now whether people should help aged people who fall over. There have been cases when people who went to help have been incriminated as the cause of the accident and were asked to pay for medical treatment and compensation.

Some people said they are not rich enough to help those who fall as they may be asked to pay money, while others argue that these are just individual cases and most old people are kind.

Several organizations give a suggestion – when you see someone who needs help, report it to the police as soon as possible.
