The Zhangjiagang municipal government held a meeting on June 12 to arrange the preparatory work for an international sanitary port review that will take place in August.
Zhangjiagang Port was named by the WHO and the State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) as the first international sanitary port on April 24, 2008.
The port serves as a transportation hub and connects to 475 ports all over the world. It is the largest international trade port on the Yangtze River. The annual ships movement tops 7,000. This year, its cargo throughput is expected to exceed 270 million tons.
During the meeting, the government urged strengthened supervision and improvement of the port's management, medical services, drinking water and food safety and emergency response system, in order to maintain its global reputation.
