Torch relay for China's City Games ends in Nanchang

NANCHANG: The torch relay for the 7th China's City Games concluded on Thursday with the last stop coming to Nanchang in front of a passionate crowd.

A rainy day failed to dampen the enthusiasm of citizens of Nanchang, the capital city of Jiangxi province, as a total of 60 runners took part in the 7.2-kilometer event carrying the torch of "light of happiness".

"I felt really proud to be the first torchbearer in Nanchang," said Wen You, the head of Nanchang's SOS Children's Village that provides long-term care for orphans and children in need. "Choosing me as the first torchbearer also shows Nanchang's recognition of our village and the charity program."

This year's edition of the City Games, the most important junior competition in China, started the torch relay on Oct 3 and limited the torch tour just inside Jiangxi province with frugality in mind.

During the 11-day tour, the torch relay involved 260 torchbearers from all walks of life, and covered 11 cities including Jingdezhen, also known as the "Porcelain Capital" for its delicate pottery. It remains unknown who will light the cauldron at the opening ceremony on Oct 16.

The City Games of China will lower its curtain on Oct 25.

The City Games is a national multi-sport event held every four years, featuring more than 7,000 athletes younger than 18 competing in 25 sports. It is regarded as one of the biggest platforms for Chinese sports hopefuls in which Olympic hurdler Liu Xiang and NBA star Yao Ming made their early name.
