Jiangxi provincial government will establish six new nature reserves under its provincial protection scheme. Lingyun Mountain of Ningdu county has been promoted from a nature reserve under county protection to one under provincial protection, according to the forestry bureau of Ganzhou city.
Lingyun Mountain, located in Dongshao township of Ningdu county, is 1,455 meters above sea level. It belongs to the Yushan mountain range, and is the highest mountain in Ningdu county. The peaks higher than 1,000 meters in the region are Niuguzhang, Tianmenzhang, Yagudong, and Lumufeng.
Lingyun Mountain has a flat peak. It was originally known as Pingshan Mountain, and was renamed Lingyun Mountain in the Tang Dynasty. It divides Ningdu county of Ganzhou city, Yongfeng county of Ji’an city, and Le’an county of Fuzhou city. Climb to the top of the peak and you can see five counties: Ningdu, Yongfeng, Le’an, Nanfeng and Guangchang.
Lingyun Mountain covers an area of 25 square kilometers. It has forestry wetlands, a typical and representative feature of China’s subtropical regions. It is the source of Meijiang River, a branch of Ganjiang River. It is home to many rare and endangered beasts and birds under national key protection. Therefore, it is one of the areas of the province with the greatest potentials and highest values for ecological protection and construction.
In 1992, Ningdu county government decided the nature reserve was under county level protection. In 2009, the county applied to Jiangxi provincial government to promote the area as a nature reserve under provincial protection.
In addition to Ningdu Lingyun Mountain, there are five other places that are nature reserves under provincial protection. They are the Yushan Xinjiang River source of Shangrao city, Ruichang taxus chinensis var. mairei nature reserve in Jiujiang city, Yinshan nature reserve in Wuning city, Jing’an Liaohe Andrias nature reserve in Yichun city, and Yujingshan manglietia decidua nature reserve.
