When the 15th China Green Food Exposition opened in Shanghai, on Nov 6, with the theme "Green ecology, green production, green consumers", there were 22 Jilin province companies taking part, occupying 12 booths and showing more than 100 products, such as grains and oils, vegetables and fruits, drinks, poultry and forest products.

The organizers explained that pollution-free, green, organic foods and geographical indicators are a new trend in farm produce, and a popular choice for consumers as traditional agriculture becomes more modern. These products have developed rapidly, in Jilin over the past 20 years, in quality and profits and are now a driving force for the rural economy, according to Jilin officials and, according to Yang Lin, head of the province’s green food office, its rice, corn and forest products were popular with international buyers at the expo.

By the end of 2013, Jilin had 358 green food species and 314 organic foods and 14 geographical indicators, with more than 3 million hectares of farmland under supervision, and an annual output of 29 million tons of produce, worth 87 billion yuan ($14.2 million).

"With our natural resource advantages, we’ll continue to grow rapidly in green agriculture, and develop our own brands," said Yang.

Organic rice from the city of Yushu, attracted the attention of Xu Ciyang, a buyer from Hubei province, who said that Jilin rice is high in quality and has a good taste.

Song Xiaofeng, the Yushu Party’s head of agriculture, said they used the expo to show their pollution-free, green, organic farm produce, especially the rice, which is always welcome at exhibitions, with two rice types being selected for the Shanghai expo.

Next year, song added, plan to bring their liquor to the expo.
