For National Youth Day, Jilin University, in Jilin province, saw 1,200 of its students celebrating with an annual marathon on campus along a 7-kilometer course, on May 4, which started off with resounding cheers.
In commenting on the event, Mei Na, of the student service office, remarked, "The event is already 8-years-old and is run by our students to celebrate some of the ideals that helped shape modern China and that they want to pass on."
China's May 4th Movement, in 1919, was an anti-imperialist, anti-feudal political and cultural development begun by college students and left a legacy that encouraged students to pursue academic freedom, independent thinking and the truth.
