Rich gem mine discovered in Liaoning

Updated: 2010-02-03

According to Chinese Business Morning View, a gem mine buried for over 400 million years has been discovered by Liaoning province's geological department. It is estimated that this mine contains about 210,000 carats (42 kilograms) of various gems including diamond.

Yu Wenli, a member of the Liaoning People's Political Consultative Conference and the director general for the Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources Exploration Liaoning province, recently disclosed that the bureau discovered a large diamond mine in Liaoning province's Wafangdian District. It is the only diamond mine to be discovered in China in the last 30 years.

A diamond mine is usually known as a "treasure house." This diamond mine mainly contains diamond and other gems, and its value is hard to estimate. According to the bureau, most of the diamond within the mine is world-class high-quality diamond. Its quality is even higher than that of the diamond produced in South Africa. In this mine, the reserves of high quality grade diamond accounts for 70 percent of the total diamond reserves.

Australia's diamond reserves ranks first in the world, but its diamond quality grade is low. There, reserves of high quality grade diamond only accounts for 5 percent of its total diamond reserves. The fine quality of the gems in the newly-discovered mine is also quite high. Yu said that if the mine is exploited at the current normal speed, it can be exploited for about 20 years.
