Shipping services resume on Yalu River after floods

Updated: 2010-08-13

SHENYANG - Northeast China's Liaoning province Thursday reopened shipping lanes on the Yalu River, which borders the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), after services were suspended for ten days because of continuous downpours and floods.

The water level had dropped sufficiently to allow a resumption of shipping, said an official with the maritime department of Dandong City Government.

Heavy rains have pounded Dandong City, Liaoning province since late July.

The department suspended shipping services on August 2 as water flows had exceeded 10,000 cubic meters per second.

The floods had led to more than 10,000 residents being evacuated from their homes in Dandong.

According to the local meteorological department, the main flood season was not over and typhoons could still hit further disrupting river transport.
