Liaoning province and the city of Dandong had been nervous for three days, but as of 6:30 pm Aug 8, Typhoon Muifa missed the city and landed instead on the northwestern coast of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), 67 kilometers from the Yalu River, provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters officials said late Thursday.

After landing on the Korean coast, the typhoon moved toward the northeast, weakening significantly,

Dandong did report 96.4 millimeters of rain from late Aug 7 to Aug 8. The strongest winds blew at 15.7 meters per second at 1 pm on Aug 8 at Donggang station.

Although the typhoon missed the city, Dandong continued to experience 50 millimeters to 100 millimeters of rain from 8 pm Aug 8 to 8 pm Aug 9 as a result of the typhoon’s proximity, provincial officials said.

The city’s southern coastal areas were expected to continue experiencing heavy rains, so local governments were advised to pay close attention to weather forecasts and be ready to intensify flood prevention measures.
