Dandong was awarded one of the top 100 Chinese tourism cities for 2011 at the Third Annual Conference on 'Tourism Competitiveness', according to the Dandong Tourist Administration. Dandong has been ranked on the list for three consecutive years.

The conference has been sponsored annually by the China Society of Urban Economy and the China Travel & Tourism Press.

More than 290 candidate cities were assessed through 150 indicators including environmental-friendly capabilities, resources attractiveness, market influence and management competitiveness. The rankings had been determined by taking into consideration the results from questionnaires, data collection, statistical analysis and expert appraisals.
