Shenyang, known as China’s “equipment manufacturing department”, is a key industrial base with a focus on the manufacturing industry. Constructed during the first Five-Year Plan (1953-1957), Shenyang industrial base has set more than 500 records in China’s industrial history, such as making China’s first lightning arrester, metal cutting machine tool, centrifugal compressor, 500,000-V EHV transformer, medical-use CT scanner, and China’s first deep-water robotic explorer.
The old industrial base of Shenyang has regained its vigor since the implementation of reform and opening up, especially since the initiation of the national program to reinvigorate Northwest China. Significant progress has been made in developing the equipment manufacturing industry. A total of 18 products from Shenyang industrial base managed to be ranked in the world’s top 10. A number of excellent companies in the base are emerging to be leading ones of their kind in China. With the rapid development of the modern services industry, high-tech industry and modern agriculture; the city has formed a well-rounded industrial network, consisting of Western Shenyang’s Industrial Corridor featuring high-end manufacturing; Eastern Shenyang’s automobiles industrial zone and aviation industrial zone; Hunnan New District featuring strategic emerging and high-tech industries; Qipanshan International Scenic Areas featuring tourist attractions and cultural innovations; and the Central Urban Corridor featuring modern services. The city takes on a new look with each passing day thanks to the scope of industries expanding.
It has been honored with several titles such as “one of the most vigorous cities in China”, “national model city for environmental protection”, “national city with large forest coverage” and “demonstration area for old industrial base upgrading and developed manufacturing industry”. The overall competiveness of Shenyang has been ranked in the top 10 among China’s cities for several successive years.
The cities of Anshan, Fushun, Benxi, Yingkou, Liaoyang, Tieling and Fuxin in Liaoning province are all within a one-hour journey from Shenyang, with a focus on basic industries and the processing industry. All these cities, along with Shenyang, constitute an urban agglomeration, namely, the Shenyang Economic District, which covers an area of 75,000 square kilometers, with a population of 24 million. Approved by the State Council, the Shenyang Economic District will become a pilot area for industrial reforms. It is predicted by analysts to develop into a new economic urban belt for China with promising prospects in the 21st century. The city will also become an important economic growth pole for the Northeast Asia region, according to analysts. Faced with golden opportunities, the city aims to be a nationally advanced equipment manufacturing base and National Central City.
Thanks to its advantages, Shenyang Economic District attracts not only Chinese companies but also many foreign firms, many of which are Fortune Global 500 enterprises, including BMW, General Electric, Siemens, Michelin and Yamanouchi.
Shenyang boasts numerous business opportunities and great potential for the future. At present, Shenyang has launched 100 projects to attract investment, covering machine tools, electrical engineering, modern architecture, auto parts, cultural creativity and the deep-processing of agricultural products. Shenyang is committed to creating a favorable business environment with a complete range of services and aims to reduce costs for investors, with the hope of sharing the benefits from the rejuvenation of the old industrial base of Shenyang.
