Zhuyuan is a village inhabited by the Naxi ethnic group in Lijiang. The villagers are all skilled in bamboo planting, cultivating and weaving. Zhuyuan is also called the "Village of Grass and Bamboo Weaving".

"Ever since Zhuyuan entered the second batch of Model Villages of 'Culture Benefits the People' in Yunnan province and was named the 'Village of Grass and Bamboo Weaving Craftsmanship Inheritance', the mass production of grass and bamboo weaving items has brought the villagers wealth,” said Li Bingjun, the village head of Zhuyuan.

Currently, 20 percent of the total income of Zhuyuan comes from grass and bamboo weaving products. The products now range from weaved hats and stools to vases.

In the late years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), workshops of grass and bamboo weaving had already appeared in Zhuyuan. Recently, with the improvement of weaving techniques, the villagers focus more on the intensive processing of weaving products, aiming at enhancing their market competitiveness.

In addition, the CPC Party committee and government of Shigu town provides great support for the villagers in Zhuyuan, sending people to Zhejiang, the "Hometown of Bamboo Products", to learn more techniques.

In 2003, the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan, Zhejiang Huazhu Science and Technology Development Center, and the Lijiang Ecological Conservation and Development Association made Zhuyuan the training base of bamboo weaving.

Since the grass and bamboo weaving company was established in Zhuyuan, the chain of production, supply and marketing has gradually developed, making the grass and bamboo products of Zhuyuan more popular.
