Branded as one of the hottest destinations for tourists on the National Day holiday, Lijiang is not just a town of mysterious beauty and relaxed atmosphere.

There are two products in particular which stand out so much in Lijiang that they have been awarded with geographical indications – Yongsheng Chenghai spiral seaweed and Huaping mangoes.

Just as Champagne in France is known for its bubbly beverage, and Yangcheng Lake in Suzhou for its hairy crabs – so is Lijiang for seaweed and mangoes – and the town is pushing for more of its produce to receive geographical indications.

To encourage producers to ensure quality remains second-ton-none, Lijiang's bureau of quality and technical supervision organized a training session on Oct 9 for its many farmers and producers of iconic goods.

The lecture also discussed pollution-free agricultural products and organic product identification.

Hoping to be included on the geographic indication list in the near future are Yongsheng county’s safflower and Lijiang’s green gooseberry.
