To welcome the upcoming Mid-autumn Festival, the Old Town of Lijiang in Yunnan province held a mooncake eating competition on Sept 16.

The mooncakes served to participants were flower cakes, a famous local snack with edible roses inside. A visitor surnamed He ate 10 cakes in just three minutes, taking first place in the competition.

The event aimed to promote local featured flower cakes for the approaching Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of every eighth lunar month. It has become a trend for visitors in Yunnan to buy flower cakes as gifts, instead of traditional mooncakes.

Boasting mild temperatures, Yunnan is the largest planting base of roses in China. Roses not only provide beautiful views for visitors, but also serve as a great stuffing for pastries.
