China has been celebrating Cultural Heritage Day on the second Saturday of June every year since 2006. In 2017, the day was renamed Cultural and Natural Heritage Day. This year, the day fell on June 8.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, Lijiang's Naxi residents still preserve much of their native Dongba culture and their deep spiritual connection to nature.

Since 1997, Lijiang has invested more than 3 billion yuan ($433.23 million) for a number of infrastructure construction projects related to tourism, health, communications, power supply, water supply, and transportation.

It allocates 10 million yuan each year as a national cultural protection and development fund, which is used for the protection, inheritance, and display of the traditional national culture of the old town.

To date, the Old Town of Lijiang has basically achieved full coverage of the video surveillance in its core area, which effectively ensures the safety of the tourist area.
