POWERCHINA to build cement plant in Kenya

Updated: 2020-11-30

POWERCHINA Hubei Engineering Co -- a unit of POWERCHINA -- signed an engineering procurement construction (EPC) contract on Nov 26 to build a cement clinker plant in Kenya in East Africa.

Cement clinker is the intermediate product comprising cement nodules, or stones, created by sintering and often used as a binder in many finished cement products.

Located in Bisil town, Kajiado county in Kenya, the project is 200 kilometers away from the capital Nairobi. When completed, it will have an estimated daily output of 6,000 metric tons of clinker and 10,000 tons of cement.

The main work of the EPC contract includes the construction and electrical installation of substations, installation of 34 kilometers of 132-kilovolt single-circuit transmission lines, as well as the installation, commissioning and civil construction of the main equipment for clinker and cement production.

The plant will greatly reduce Kenya's dependence on imported clinker and provide a strong impetus for the country's infrastructure construction sector.

It was another achievement for POWERCHINA Hubei Engineering Co which was expanding its market in East and South Africa, after its construction of a 700 megawatt coal-fired power plant project in Mozambique.
