The Pengqi-Qixia Highway broke ground on April 1 in Yantai, Shandong province. The highway is scheduled to open to traffic in 2016.

With a received investment of 3.01 billion yuan ($491.4 million), the highway will be 45.2km long when completed and will include two sections. The first section will have a designed speed of 80 kilometers per hour and span 5.27km in length, starting from Penglai city and ending at State Road 206. The second section will have a total of four lanes in two directions and will be 39.92km long starting at State Road 206 and ending in Qixia city. It will have a designed speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

Connecting with the Rongcheng-Wuhai highway and the Shenyang-Haikou highway, the Pengqi expressway will play a key role in improving Yantai's transport capability and boosting the tourism industry.
