In Jiaodong folk customs, the thirteenth day of the first lunar month marks the Dragon King's birthday, which falls on Feb 9 this year. Fishermen in Langya Town of Qingdao West Coast New Area organized a grand party in celebration to make sacrifices to the god of water and weather and pray for a good fishing harvest in the new year.

The ancient ritual, based on historic stories related to the sea, was held in style with more than 200 locals dressed in traditional costume, giving offerings and praying sincerely.

A temple fair and folk culture art show also took place in the town alongside the worship ceremony.

In traditional Chinese culture, the Dragon King rules the sea and weather, which are vital for fishermen. As a result, the Dragon King's birthday is an important festival for local fishermen.
