Many scenic spots in Shandong province have ventured into the night-time economy in recent years, local media reported on March 25.

The tourism products in local attractions at night are mainly lantern shows in winter and performances, sightseeing boats, beer and music festivals in summer.

Increasingly more Shandong scenic spots are hosting lantern shows. The Spouting Spring in Jinan, capital of Shandong, has run the event for 40 years, entertaining 800,000 visitors this year and the creative cultural products derived from lanterns were especially popular among children.

Two scenic spots now offer a sightseeing boat service, namely, the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center and ancient Taierzhuang town.

Some attractions create beautiful night scenes to draw visitors. The Spouting Spring, Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center and ancient Taierzhuang town are the best places to admire the fine night views.

The ancient town uses colorful lights to create a gorgeous night scene, organizes various activities to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival and stages lantern shows and intangible cultural heritage performances in winter.

According to Huang Xiaoli, deputy general manager of Taierzhuang Ancient Town Tourism Group, in addition to more ticket proceeds, these activities also increase the revenue of restaurants and hotels within the scenic spot.

However, industry insiders warn that although scenic spots want to take advantage of the booming night-time economy, they need to consider if they can offer complete supporting services, such as catering and accommodation, as well as a variety of activities throughout the year. Otherwise, it could be hard to retain tourists.

"Night tour organizers need to launch different tourism products in different seasons to maintain the flow of tourists," noted Huang.
