Jiading recognized for its S&T progress

( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2013-12-05

The Jiading district of Shanghai has again gained “national advanced city for scientific and technological progress” recognition after a recent evaluation by the Science and Technology Ministry.

The biennial ministry award is considered the most scientific and definitive appraisal of a city’s or region’s progress and a symbol of the recipient’s science and technology strengths, competitiveness, and innovative ability.

For the past two years, all of the district’s science and technology indices have ranked above those of other parts of Shanghai and it has given priority to S&T enterprises, strategic industries, its Zhangjiang industrial park, and “Smart City” development, while concentrating on three areas: how strategic emerging industries affect development methods, how indigenous innovation affects industries, and how S&T results improve a city.

It now has 395 national high-tech enterprises, or 9.2 percent of the city’s total; three national innovation firms, for 13.6 percent of the total; and two national, and 55 city-level, technological centers. The output value of its national high-tech enterprises, for 2012 was equal to 42 percent of the district’s total, showing that technology is increasing its role in the economy.
