Former US secretary of labor returns to Jiading

Elaine Chao, former United States Secretary of Labor, and her father James Chao paid a visit to their hometown, Jiading of Shanghai, on Nov 13. They were received by Ma Chunlei, Party secretary of Jiading district.

The Chaos visited Yiren Kindergarten in Jiading New City, which was named after Elaine’s grandfather and financed by the family. They were amazed by the district’s fast development in recent years and encouraged the children to work hard and make contributions to the hometown.

Ma made an introduction on the district’s development in economy, culture and education and appreciated the Chao’s contribution to the district’s educational cause. He also voiced his hope that the overseas Jiading natives can also support the development of their hometown.

The Chaos also expressed their deep affection to the hometown and said they will continue to support and make contributions to the district.

Elaine Chao, born in 1953, served as the 24th United States Secretary of Labor in the Cabinet of President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. She was the first Asian American woman and first Chinese American to be appointed to a president's Cabinet in American history.
