Authorities in Jiading district of Shanghai recently announced the opening of the Community University of Science Popularization at an inauguration ceremony, local media reported on Jan 18.

Having such a university will be conducive to improving local people's scientific literacy and helping the district reach its goal of becoming a scientific and technological innovation center.

Officials said that the university is open to local residents and aims to be a science education platform. It will consist of three parts: the district-level headquarters campus, branches in the towns, and branches at local communities.
