The Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai branch will set up an elementary school in Jiading district of Shanghai, as per a cooperation agreement the two parties signed on Jan 19, local media reported.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is China's national academy for natural sciences. The academy houses the country's leading scientists and functions as the national scientific think tank as well as academic governing body. It also provides advisory and appraisal services on issues stemming from the national economy, social development, and science and technology progress.

Ma Chunlei, Party chief of Jiading district said that the cooperation with CAS Shanghai branch will advance the district's education reform and improve its education quality.

Ma expected that both parties will join hands to nurture more excellent students who have creativity and critical thinking. He added that the cooperation will pave the way for the district to become a scientific and technological innovation center.

Located in the district's Juyuan New Area, the new school caters to students from Grade one to Grade nine. It is scheduled to start operation in 2017 and slated to have 49 classes.

Local authorities said that the school will focus on science education and has a goal of ranking among Shanghai's top primary and secondary schools in the coming five years.
