Some 11 families in Nanxiang town, Jiading district of Shanghai joined a Nanxiang xiaolongbao DIY activity on June 11, in celebration of the 11th National Cultural Heritage Day.
With a history of more than a century, Nanxiang xiaolongbao, or Naixiang steamed bun, is a traditional local snack featuring thin bread, tender meat and juicy filling. Its preparation technique is quite exquisite, incorporating about 20 procedures. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2014.
The participants watched a promotional film on Nanxiang Xiaolongbao, gaining a better understanding of the history of this traditional technique.
Also, they learned skills of making Xiaolongbao from an inheritor of the technique. The event required parents and children to work and communicate together.
The organizers said that the event was expected to introduce this traditional cultural heritage to more people, particularly the younger generation, and to encourage them to learn about its history and development.
The State Council sought to strengthen protection of the country's cultural heritage by declaring the second Saturday of June as China's National Cultural Heritage Day in 2005.
