The Shanghai International Automobile City, located in Anting town, the city's Jiading district, has Chinese internet giant Tencent as its new strategic partner after they signed a cooperation deal on Dec 15.
The two sides agreed to work together on development and commercialization of automated driving, high-definition and high-precision maps, and standards for smart connected vehicles.
Tencent's automated driving lab will move to the automobile city and work with it to develop more technologies in the field of automated driving based on existing research platforms such as the United Innovation Center and the Intelligent Vehicle Research Center.
The lab, launched in the second half of 2016, has a research team consisting of well-known Chinese and foreign experts and focuses on R&D of core technologies in automated driving, such as 360 degree scanning, high-precision maps, point cloud information processing, and fusion location positioning.
The automobile city has demonstration centers for both electric vehicles and smart connected vehicles. It has been working on promoting an e-car rental program and has put 7,000 electric cars in use so far, advancing the establishment of certain standards for smart connected vehicle technology.
The auto city also has China's first smart-connected auto innovation industrial park, which already has or plans to build many related research centers.
The cooperation between the two parties is considered a boost to the field of automated driving in China.
