The Smart Science and Generic Technology Research Institute, a new center designed to help local universities and businesses work together on technology transfer, was inaugurated in Nanxiang town in Shanghai's Jiading district on Dec 23.

A joint project by Nanxiang Shineland Industrial Park and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, the new institute is also designed to serve as a platform for industry-university cooperation on smart park systems and scientific innovation.

According to local officials, the institute will focus on transferring technological achievements of domestic universities and patents brought in from abroad, as well as offering platforms for Chinese and foreign experts to exchange ideas.

Its first project will be a smart energy management system in the Nanxiang Shineland Industrial Park, which includes building an optical network and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) system to collect electric energy data, debugging and testing the system terminal, and displaying the structure, functions and operation of the system.

Yan Jianming, head of Nanxiang town, attended the inauguration ceremony and emphasized Nanxiang's significant role in building Jiading into a scientific and technological innovation center.

Yan said that the launch of such an institute will help promote the town's scientific innovation and local government will give it strong support to ensure its further development.
