A children's theatre camp was opened at a primary school in Jiangqiao town, Jiading district on Sept 13.

Organized by the Malanhua Children's Theater and the Luoxin Drama Workshop, the camp will impart drama skills to children using a step-by-step approach to learning.

For starters, the young campers will take classes at weekends on reading and acting to help them grasp the essence of plays. At the end of the course, the children will stage a play at Shanghai Children's Theater as their final test.

Organizers said they had held eight such activities in July and August involving more than 1,600 local children and parents, who have reaped a whole host of benefits from it.

"Taking part in plays not only boosts teamwork sills, but also the imagination, ability to express oneself, as well as self-confidence. More specifically, it can improve children's reading skills," says Cai Jinping, curator of the China Welfare Association Children's Art Theatre.

Luo Xin, owner of Luoxin Drama Workshop, thinks plays help children bond with their peers, and even their parents.

"Through plays, the interpersonal relations of children are reestablished. It’s also good for enhancing communication between children and their parents," he said.
