A national touring exhibition organized by Shanghai's Jiading Museum on the famed Chinese imperial exam opened at Jiangning Museum, Nanjiang, Jiangsu province, on Sept 20. The exhibition will run until Nov 20.

The Chinese imperial examination system was the means by which an individual rose to a bureaucratic position in imperial China. The exam system's origins lie in the Han Dynasty period (206 BC-220), but were formally consolidated during the Sui period (AD 581-618) and gained full effect from the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) onwards. The practice was abolished in 1905.

The exhibition consists of five sections: the evolution of imperial examination system; procedures of imperial examination; imperial examination and social civilization; imperial examination and education; and international influence of imperial examination.

Cultural relics, charts, models, and tables are used in the exhibition to detail the complex and fascinating history of the rigors sustained by most of China's leading scholars, and also to help visitors gain a better understanding of the broad impact of the system.

The imperial examination-themed exhibition started touring the country in 1996 and has been displayed at more than 30 museums and universities around the country.

The arrival of the exhibition at Jiangning Museum, is the second-time cooperation between the two museums. It is expected to promote cultural exchange between Jiading and Jiangning and enrich local citizens' cultural life.
