Xuhang town in Shanghai's Jiading district launched a straw weaving training activity to enable local students to gain a better understanding of this traditional craftsman Dec 12.
Nearly 400 primary school students attended the event. Wang Qin, inheritor of Xuhang straw weaving, was invited to explain the history, development and some simple techniques of straw weaving.
Under her guidance, all the students had hands-on experience of straw weaving. And the 10 best young makers were awarded with fine straw weaving products.
Xuhang straw weaving is a traditional and representative handicraft of Xuhang town, leading to the Xuhang’s reputation as the "hometown of straw weaving".
The craft has a history of more than 1,000 years, with the technique originating in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It was on the second list of National Intangible Cultural Heritages in 2008.
Xuhang has given strong support to this traditional craft in recent years. Its efforts include building an institute for straw weaving inheritance, and training and organizing professional straw weaving teams to promote the craft.
This event was aimed at teaching more students about Xuhang straw weaving, giving them experience of straw weaving, and promoting the Xuhang craft.
